Race staff favors move; Riley calls it 'slap in face' By David Quick The Post and Courier Friday, August 21, 2009 A proposal to move the two-day Cooper River Bridge Run and Walk Expo from Gaillard Municipal Auditorium to Charleston Area Convention Center in North Charleston has split the Bridge Run's executive board and drawn the ire of Charleston Mayor Joe Riley. The Bridge Run staff is recommending the move because of Gaillard's relative lack of space and awkward, multi-floor configuration, as well as for parking and traffic issues. For years, the peninsula has been routinely gridlocked from mid-morning to night on the Friday before the race as people flood into town to pick up race packets at the expo and visitors head to hotels. Read the rest of the story here.

There's really only one question -- Who is the Bridge Run for? Is it for the runners or to make the mayor feel good?

I agree with King Joe. It's a Mount Pleasant / Charleston thing. Move it to the Yorktown. Plenty of space and parking.

North Charleston would be the best place - but it really makes no difference to me. I despise going into the Charleston peninsula and try to avoid North Charleston at all costs.

Izzit a slap in the face or the loss of the event's rental and parking revenues for another of Joe's white elephants. For open floor space and easy parking, the North Chuck convention center is just fine for the Expo and doesn't have the bottleneck of the Yorktown/Shrine Temple site.
Just common sense, but that hasn't been consistently in evidence with all the yankees round here.

Oh what the heck, leave it where it is, just so long as the cruise ships don't come in those days....
Read "Outbound - the Curious Secession of Latter-Day Charleston" by Charlie Geer for a real good laugh along those lines (and others!) You come-yuhs will learn something about the real Charleston!
