This 49 minute DVD portrays a world that in
1989, Charleston was still ...
“to poor to paint and too proud to whitewash.”
This is a chance to see Charleston before “the change.”
Filmed in 1989-90, this DVD follows a tour given at that
time through a Charleston that had not really changed for a
century. Today, the population is seven times what it was
then. The buildings are still there, but they are no longer
inhabited by native Charlestonians. Featuring interviews
with the late Berneston Baker, Elizabeth Verner Hamilton and
Jan Huger, this film reflects a gentler time when
“characters” ruled as well as historical facts that few
know.
It has been said that Charleston leapt from the 19th Century
to the 21st in a single bound. This presentation of the city
has preserved it as a fly in amber. |
